The Two Best Ways You Can Keep Your Heart Healthy

Your heart is the most important muscle in your body. Because it is so important, you need to make sure you are always taking care of it. Here are two of the best things you can do for cardiac care to keep your heart in great working condition:

Eat Right

One of the best things you can do is eat properly. By eating foods that help your arteries stay clear and supple, your heart will not need to work as hard to keep blood flowing properly through your body. Two ways that you can greatly improve your heart health are by eating oats and avoiding sugars.

Oats are a great source of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is beneficial because it can help suck up the bad cholesterol in your bloodstream. For simple ways to increase your oat intake, work them into existing recipes. Oats are versatile enough that you can add them in without any problems in many recipes. Consider adding a half cup of steel-cut oats to a packaged pancake mix or a quarter cup of raw rolled oats to a smoothie to increase their nutritional value and help your heart.

Sugars are one of the sources of triglycerides, which are extremely detrimental to your heart's health. Refined sugars and simple carbohydrates like white flour help to elevate your triglyceride levels, while replacing simple carbohydrates with more complex ones like whole grain wheat, brown rice, and corn.

Exercise properly

The best exercises are ones that work multiple muscle groups in your body. Likewise, the larger the muscles you are working, the more blood the muscle needs. As a result, do exercises that target multiple large muscle groups simultaneously. Some exercises that do this well are as follows:

  • Push-ups and planks. Push-ups and planks primarily work your deltoids, trapezius, and stomach muscles while also working your hamstrings, quadriceps, biceps, and triceps.
  • Squats and lunges. Both squats and lunges work all of your leg and gluteal muscles simultaneously. Because nearly 30% of your body weight is in this part of your body, this can be a valuable way to improve your heart's health by regularly doing lunges as you walk around your home.
  • Swimming. Swimming works out every muscle in your body simultaneously as your body works to keep balance in the water. It is also a great option if you aren't in great shape, as the water reduces the stress on your joints. Over time you can build up your endurance by swimming laps until you can go long distances.

As you eat a heart-healthy diet and regularly exercise, you will be able to improve the health of your heart and live a longer, happier life.
